Water enters houses after canal breach - Newspaper - DAWN.COM

BAHAWALPUR: Because of a 20-foot wide breach occurring in a canal, water entered in some houses at nearby Basti Karnowali, Kahrore Pucca, in Lodhran district on Tuesday.

According to Rescue 1122 media coordinator Mr Safdar, on receipt of emergency calls from locals, a rescuers’ team reached the area with heavy machinery and started work to plug the breach.

He said that after over three-hour long efforts, the breach was plugged, but by then, the canal water had entered some of the houses located in low-lying areas.

However, he said, no loss of life was reported.

Meanwhile, six persons, including two women, suffered serious injuries when a speeding motorcycle-rickshaw overturned near Zain Factory on Jalalpur Road in Lodhran district.

All the injured were shifted to the district headquarters hospital for treatment.

ARRESTED: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) claims to have arrested six alleged human smugglers here on Tuesday.

According to FIA Deputy Director Sarfraz Ali, on a tip-off, a team of the agency raided a place, arrested six alleged human smugglers.

He said the FIA had already received complaints that the suspects were allegedly involved in sending people abroad illegally after receiving heavy amounts from them.

DRIVE: Under the instructions of Punjab chief minister, a sanitation drive titled ‘Saaf Punjab’ was launched here.

In this connection, a ceremony was arranged here on Tuesday that was addressed by designated Punjab governor Baleegh-ur-Rehman, DC Irfan Ali Kathiya, Bahawalpur Waste Management Company (BWMC) CEO Naeem Akhtar and others.

Speakers persuaded the participants to create awareness among the people to ensure sanitation in their house and localities.
